The first ODC edition took place in 2016 and came in response to three major questions: the large influx of refugees in 2015, the demand for broad dissemination of digital literacy, and the internal drive to focus on a larger social role as a school and learning community. A collaboration between KASK & Conservatorium, Design Museum Gent and Mesh vzw has made possible the continuity of the program.

Since then, Open Design Course has helped many participants on their way. Some of them have started higher studies, others are working.
