Open Design Lab (ODL) is a spin-off of the Open Design Course with a special approach and specific objectives. It is built around a series of three distinct laboratories where participants explore open source software that can be used to establish design practices. The program welcomes refugees and asylum seekers who are interested in, or already engaged with, digital art and design.
Through instructional sessions, project support, and coaching, participants are encouraged to explore, experiment, and gain proficiency in using (digital) tools that enhance their creative practice.
ODL consists of three different lab editions, with each edition taking place in a different city and at a different time between September 2025 and July 2027. Every ODL edition is followed by an Open Lab (exhibition).
Across these three Open Design Labs, we aim to build a strong community with and for our participants. Expand their professional networks by connecting them with local cultural and artistic professionals from Flanders and Brussels.
About ODLTextile 2025
The first ODL will be held in September 2025 at Buda::lab in Kortrijk. Titled ODL TEXTILE, it reflects the region’s deep-rooted connection to the textile industry.
The course method is based on co-creation and peer learning, and puts an emphasis on new media literacy. It will provide practical and theoretical competencies. The program focuses on open design principles and open software tools as a technological and as a cultural, artistic and critical practice.
Over the course of five weeks, you’ll work with a range of machines, including 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, sewing machine, and embroidery machine. Familiarity with design software, physical computing, and, of course, an interest in textiles is recommended.
